Joseph Kuzi, who the world knows as the founder of Diamond Services and EDC, was not in the natural diamond industry from the beginning. Born in Israel, this man joined the Israeli forces after which he graduated with a degree in Practical Engineering from Tel Aviv University in 1984.
There are hundreds of people around the world who find their true passion in midlife. However, there are a few who actually step up and change their field of career. It takes huge courage to change careers midlife, and this is what Joseph did. He did not plan to become a diamond expert when he was in high school or his college, but he did find his way into the natural diamond industry eventually.
Finding Way into the Natural Diamonds Industry
Joseph spent almost 13 years in serving his country and was appointed to the Marketing division at El-Op, an Israeli Highteck firm afterward. He spent ten years working for this firm.
He stepped into the natural diamond industry as the partner and Managing Director of UBEX, the Israel based diamond-trading and manufacturing company. Joseph’s time with this company proved beneficial. It was under his leadership that the firm saw its annual revenues grow from $5 million to $180 million within four years.
Joseph’s interest in the sector grew, and he founded his own company for the development of new diamonds, KUZI Ltd., in 2000. He worked on his firm for three years, and in 2003, he sold his setup. However, it was not the end of his passion for the diamond industry, but he did decide to go further with his education. Joseph enrolled in Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program in 2003. In 2006, he began providing consultation services to the diamond-related companies.
He then helped increase the reach of European Gemological Laboratories by becoming a licensee of this organization. The association has been established to offer options for diamonds that are already set in jewelry. Joseph helped in expanding the reach by launching the EGL gem lab in Hong Kong, the first-ever facility in the region. He became the CEO of this EGL lab in Hong Kong.
Realizing the Threat of Undisclosed LGD Diamonds
One of the highlights of his career in this industry is his groundbreaking research and innovative solutions that he has designed to address the rising threat of undisclosed lab-grown diamonds. Joseph was one of those few professionals who were able to realize the threat the high production of LGDs was posing to the natural diamond industry.
In 2011, while he was studying about LG diamonds, he realized how the rapid increase in production of these diamonds and the use of highly sophisticated machinery and equipment was putting the natural diamond industry a threat. The biggest concern for him was the matter of undisclosed LGDs, which could increase the rates of fraud in the industry, putting both the business, investors, as well as consumers under the risk of heavy loss.
Joseph tried hard to convince the business owners as well as the investors as to the degree of seriousness of the threat of raid increase in the production of LGD. Everyone believed that the natural diamonds and LG diamonds are two entirely different sectors, and there is no way the rise of lab-grown diamond production can affect the natural diamond industry.
It was after this that Joseph founded the Diamond Services in Hong Kong in 2012. The company was founded to develop a technological system and offer services for the detection of lab-grown diamonds, treated diamonds, and simulants.
Joseph and his team created a testing technique, DiamaTest, that offered higher accuracy in comparison to the traditional detection technique of using fluorescence. The traditional technique is used to screen HPHT diamonds at room temperature. At the same time, the DiamaTest allowed screening of all sizes and shapes of diamonds to be screened at the temperature of liquid nitrogen providing accurate results.
The New York City brand of Diamond Services found out that LG diamonds were making its way into jewelry manufacturing, giving rise to frauds. It was after this discovery; Joseph’s research found out that HPHT diamonds that have been passed through irradiation can go undetected from the traditional detection technique.
Joseph Kuzi thoroughly researched and did not rest until he devised another detection apparatus, offering an additional layer of accuracy. He launched the Diamond Natural Device (DND). The company offers in-house detection services to traders, business owners, investors, and consumers to get their diamonds and even more important – jewelry, screened in a proper laboratory setting as the apparatus can only accurately work in such conditions.
Joseph Kuzi, who serves as the CEO and founder of EGL Asia, founder, and president of Diamonds Services LTD., and founder of EDC, is a titan in the world of natural diamonds. Not only was he one of the first ones to realize the threat of fraud due to undisclosed LG diamonds but his Diamond Services is among the very few companies to devise a more accurate and efficient LG detection apparatus. He realized that increasing sophistication through the use of advanced machinery requires a detection technique that can surpass the sophistication and advancement.
